Euranet: BETWEEN PROTECTIONISM AND OPENNESS, A NARROW WAY TO CURB FOREIGN SUBSIDIE

I spoke to Euranet about the new anti foreign subsidies instrument.

Anna Cavazzini, Member of the European Parliament – Greens/EFA, Germany: The white paper could go even further (in English)

“I think the Commission white paper is quite ambitious, it goes beyond state aid and the Commission would get new market-scrutiny powers and new possibilities to stop the acquisition of European companies by foreign firms benefiting from financial support from a non-EU government – and this is quite good, I think. The white paper also includes a new mechanism to exclude subsidies or subsidise bidders from public procurement, because there we also often have the problem that the lowest price wins, and if there is lots of subsidies this creates a problem. In my eyes, what is still missing is a more comprehensive strategy on how to also deal with environmental and social dumping.”
